In 1931, Edward L. Doheny donated this beach for public use. It was California's first state beach. In his honor, it was officially named Doheny State Beach on July 1, 1963. Doheny State Beach covers 62 acres in the city of Dana Point, California.
It welcomes everyone-from campers to surfers. The southern end of the state beach has campgrounds. There are over 100 campsites; 33 of them are located only a few steps away from the sand. Earlier this summer, my family and I decided to spend a night at the campground. We live very close to Doheny, but we still wanted the Doheny camping experience. I really enjoyed our staycation and highly recommend choosing Doheny for your next camping trip. There is no public parking on this far southern end of Doheny (unless you are camping), so this end of the beach does not usually get too crowded. The northern end of Doheny is an iconic surf spot. Typically, the waves here remain small. These friendly waves are very welcoming to beginners. In fact, Doheny is known as one of the best beginner breaks in Southern California. However, beginners aren't the only ones enjoying Doheny; a good swell can create a longboarders dream. Personally, I really enjoy longboarding this wave. However, it is important to know that the lineup gets very crowded, especially in the summer. In addition to camping and surfing, Doheny is enjoyed through several other activities. Some choose to spend their day on the volleyball courts. Others enjoy sunbathing while eating a snack from the concessions stand. Kayaking or paddle boarding are also popular activities. Also, there are fire pits and picnic tables located on a big grass lawn. No matter what activity you choose, you will have an unforgettable experience at this iconic beach.
