Thousand Steps Beach: A Laguna Hidden Gem

Updated: Jul 23, 2022

Thousand Steps Beach is located at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Coast Highway in the beautiful city of Laguna Beach. Across from 9th Avenue, you will find a large, beautiful staircase leading to the shore. It got its name because it often feels like 1000 steps when you're on your way back up to PCH, but don't let the name scare you away. There are actually only 223 steps and the extra effort is definitely worth the reward. With that said, if you're looking for a new workout spot, these stairs are a leg burner. Once you reach the end of the staircase, you will find approximately 500 yards of breathtaking views. Thousand Steps beach provides so many options for fun, including sea caves, tidepools, volleyball courts and so much more. That's not all; Thousand Steps is also one of Laguna Beaches' classic shorebreak spots, attracting several local skim boarders and bodyboarders.

Head south on the shoreline and you will find a sea cave that you can explore (I like to call them mermaid caves lol). This cave also provides a beautiful photo opportunity. I have witnessed several photo shoots (graduation, engagement, wedding, etc.) here on several occasions. However, the cave is only accessible during low tide, so make sure you check the surf forecast before you head down. You might even be able to find the manmade natural pool shown in the photo above.

Head north and find another sea cave to explore that will lead you to Totuva Beach. Once again, if you are planning to access the cave, make sure you time your visit to concur with the low tide. There is no public access to Totuva, so it is important to be mindful of the tides on your way back. Although it is a delightful beach, you don't want to get trapped by the high tide. Additionally, near the cave entrance you will also find tide pools. The tidepool area consists of two large boulders and a large diversity of marine life.

This beach is most definitely not as crowded as other well-known beaches in the city. It has been kept somewhat lowkey, but I think that anyone and everyone should have the opportunity to see this spot at least once. With that said, please be very respectful of the marine life and other people who are also enjoying the beautiful ocean alongside you.

Additional Comments:

-Shorebreak is a dangerous ocean condition where waves break directly onshore. Avoid going into the water during strong shorebreak and ask a lifeguard if you are unsure or have any questions.

-If you are planning to explore the caves and/or the pools, wear sneakers! I never wear sneakers. You'll thank me later.

-Street parking is available on Pacific Coast Highway. However, there are limited spots. Get there early if you want to guarantee yourself a free spot.

-Dogs are allowed June 15 – September 10 before 9:00 am and after 6:00 pm. From September 11th through June 14th, dogs are allowed during regular beach hours. Must be leashed.

-There are accessible public restrooms and showers at the bottom of the staircase.

-Respect authorities. Lifeguards know best. If they ask you to leave a certain area because of the tides (or any other reason), listen to them. They are doing it for your well-being.

-Enjoy!
