The Wedge: a world-famous beach break

Updated: Jan 3, 2023

In 1916, Army Corps of Engineers began to build a west jetty with the goal to protect Newport Harbor from storms. Little did they know that this would lead to one of the best beach breaks in all of Southern California. Bodyboarders in the 1930s formally named this spot The Hook, but the spot was renamed to The Wedge by local body surfers in the 60s. The name has remained the same for over 60 years. It might sound familiar if you have watched the classic film, Endless Summer. The Wedge in Newport Beach, CA is a world-famous beach break located in a beautiful corner of the peninsula. Whether you are admiring or engaging, the wedge has breathtaking waves. It is common to find bodyboarders and boogie boards enjoying these waves. Surfing is less common because of the shore break; however, surfing is still performed by the incredibly talented Newport Beach locals. During a south swell, 10 to 30-foot wedge-shaped waves are anticipated near the jetty. You most definitely should not enter the water if you are not an experienced swimmer, but don't let that stop you from visiting. Many people visit this spot to relax and enjoy the views. Summer and fall are the most common times of the year to catch the high surf here. However, in 1993 City Council implemented blackball May 1 through Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Blackball bans the use of any boards in the water. This is unfortunate for surfers, but it allows the bodyboarders to have some time to themselves.
